The April 2025 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone, and welcome to the April 2025 edition of the AMWS electronic newsletter.
In this months newsletter there are, as ususual, a number of interesting articles.
One describes a piece of little known early history of the Sydney Sailors Home (now AMWS) and the attempted assassination of the then Duke of Edinburgh at Clontarf in Sydney in 1868.
However it is a contemporary piece of AMWS history that I want to focus on, and that is the impending retirement of our friend, colleague and former Chair, Captain Alan Tait. The May meeting of the AMWS Council will be Alan’s last. As Alan recounts in the newsletter, he has been involved with AMWS for decades and was Chair for many years. His contribution to AMWS, the cause of seafarer welfare and the maritime industry in general, has been immense.
I have had the great good fortune to have known Alan for most of my working life as a colleague and friend. But above all Alan, with his selfless dedication and concern for others, has been an inspiration. I could not think of a better role model for anyone working in our industry.
So Alan, I wish to say on behalf of all your colleagues, friends and admirers, thank you for all you have done.
I trust you will enjoy this edition of the newsletter.
