The April 2026 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone and welcome to the April 2026 edition of the Seafarers Welfare Bulletin.
I recently had the privilege of representing AMWS at the Annual Commemoration at the Merchant Navy War Memorial in Sydney.
This is always a significant event, organised by our fraternal association, the Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund.
It is vitally important that we never forget the merchant seafarers of all nations who have lost their lives in wartime.
Reflecting on this year's event, it occurred to me that we should not think of the threat to merchant seafarers during wartime as an academic concept or a distant historical anachronism. On the contrary, it is happening now. As this month's bulletin points out, there are any number of innocent seafarers who are currently in danger due to the conflict in the Middle East.
At AMWS we are concerned for the welfare of seafarers everywhere.
In all the discussion around the hostilities affecting shipping in and near the Straits of Hormuz, we must never forget the seafarers whose lives have been put at risk because their vessel is caught up in a geo-political crisis.
I trust you will find this edition of the Bulletin full of important articles.
