Hello everyone and welcome to the August edition of the Seafarers Welfare Bulletin.
In this edition you will find a link to an opinion piece from me on the current debate in the industry about seafarer welfare. Please take a few moments to read it, and please feel free to let us know your thoughts on these issues.
It is important to note that recognising seafarers as skilled, professional and reasonably paid is not inconsistent with recognising their genuine welfare requirements. The services AMWS helps fund are not based on portraying seafarers as helpless or destitute; rather these services exist because the nature of international seafaring creates very real needs for shore-based support, transport, connection and assistance when things go wrong.
AMWS supports a number of welfare organisations, and we will always speak out in defence of the needs of seafarers. AMWS has direct experience as an organisation that chooses to fund frontline welfare services because we consider them necessary and valuable.
In this newsletter there are articles that highlight the stress and challenges faced by seafarers. We also report on positive developments with industry participants recognising the importance of seafarer welfare as a major part of safe and efficient operations.
AMWS encourages all industry stakeholders to focus on ensuring our professional seafarers get the welfare services they deserve.
