The August 2022 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman, Mr David Parmeter
Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the AMWS electronic newsletter.
This month our focus is very much on reporting the activities of your Society and the highlighting the causes we support on your behalf.
By way of background I should explain that when AMWS was formed from the former Sydney Sailors Home, a Constitution was written that sets out the permitted objects, purposes and activities of AMWS. So at all times we must operate in accordance with our Constitution.
What the Council has decided to do is distil these concepts into a series of statements that describe the Vision, Goals and Objectives of AMWS. These are set out in the newsletter and I encourage everyone to read them.
It is our intention to promote the activities of AMWS and we invite anyone who supports what we represent to become a member.
One of the activities supported by AMWS is the Tall Ship Training programme. One way we do this is through the Trevor Howarth Memorial Scholarship run in conjunction with Sydney Cove Rotary. There is a report from Zoe, the most recent recipient of the scholarship, describing her experiences on the sailing ship Young Endeavour. It is great to hear how much benefit a young person can get from an experience like this.
There is also a report of the August Council meeting, that describes the latest round of financial grants made to the organisations in the front line of seafarer welfare. Through these grants AMWS helps to ensure these organisations have the resources they need to continue their vital work.
I hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter.
