The July 2023 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of the AMWS electronic newsletter.
One of the most important events in the international shipping calendar, is the International Day of the Seafarer, which is held every year on June 25th under the auspices of the International Maritime organisation.
The International Day of the Seafarer is celebrated worldwide to recognize and honor the invaluable contribution of seafarers to the global economy and society.
Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
Seafarers play a pivotal role in facilitating global trade and maintaining the smooth flow of goods across continents. They brave the seas, adverse weather conditions, and extended periods away from their families to ensure the delivery of essential goods and commodities worldwide. The International Day of the Seafarer is an opportunity to recognize their sacrifices, promote their well-being, and raise awareness about their vital contributions.
At AMWS we are constantly promoting the cause of seafarer welfare. In this newsletter you will see links to several articles that relate directly to the working conditions and wellbeing of seafarers. These articles are timely and relevant.
Locally, we are aware of the critical role played by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in regulating the safety of shipping and the welfare of seafarers. In this regard I am delighted to report that a member of the AMWS Council, Captain Jeanine Drummond, has been appointed Chair of AMSA. This is a very prestigious appointment and richly deserved. On behalf of everyone at AMWS I send Jeanine our warmest congratulations.
I trust you will enjoy this edition of the newsletter.
