The March 2023 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone, and welcome to the latest edition of the AMWS e-newsletter.
Those of you who are regular readers of this newsletter and our hard copy publication The Mariners Lifeline, will be aware that we frequently report on international issues affecting seafarers.
At AMWS we are committed to the welfare of seafarers worldwide. While we have an immediate concern with assisting the local seafaring community and the large number of international seafarers that visit Australian ports, we are also keenly interested in global developments that impact on seafarers.
The goals of AMWS refer to “….speaking up on issues that adversely impact on seafarers both in Australia and overseas. We will achieve practical outcomes by working with all organisations and individuals that support the welfare of seafarers….”
What AMWS has done is maintain fraternal relationships with a number of international organisations committed to seafarer welfare. One of the leading bodies in this field is the UK based International Seafarers' Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN). Not only do we lend our voice to campaigns and publicise important issues, we also take practical action. Last year ISWAN co-ordinated a campaign to assist Ukrainian seafarers and their families affected by the current war. AMWS contributed to this appeal. In an email thanking AMWS for our generous financial support, ISWAN advised they are working directly with Stella Maris and the Marine Transport Workers' Trade Union of Ukraine to allocate grants to those who need it most.
This is a great example of AMWS being able to assist seafarers and their families, wherever they may be.
I hope you enjoy this addition of the newsletter.
