The March 2025 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone, and welcome to the latest edition of the AMWS electronic newsletter.
Regular readers of the newsletter will be aware of the section entitled “The Beacon: Monthly Section Illuminating significant Activities, Trends, Personalities and Developments within the Australian Maritime Industry.”
This month the Beacon highlights the work of Sister Mary Leahy, the Stella Maris chaplain in Sydney. Sister Mary is a very well known and highly respected figure in the Australian maritime community. The work she does for visiting seafarers, of all faiths or none, is simply outstanding. The industry is blessed to have someone like Sister Mary in this role. However Sister Mary would be the first to point out that much of her work is only possible with the help and support she gets from many volunteers and helpers.
At AMWS we work closely with the faith based charities Mission to Seafarers and Stella Maris. We want to ensure they are properly resourced to be able to provide welfare services to seafarers. But there is one thing that is just as important as financial support, and that is people. MTS and Stella Maris are only able to function effectively because of volunteers who are willing to give up some time to assist. So if you, or someone you know, is looking for a practical way to be involved with mariners welfare, you should think about volunteering with one of these charities.
I trust you will enjoy this edition of the newsletter.
