The May 2023 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone,
And welcome to the May 2023 edition of the AMWS e-news.
This month on the 18th May, the global industry celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime. This year is the second such event, which is championed by the International Maritime Organisation and strongly promoted locally by AMSA and other industry stakeholders. On behalf of AMWS I am delighted to lend our voice to this event which is designed to
support and highlight the role of women in maritime.
Some people may ask, “Why should we be concerned about this issue?” My answer to them is quite simple.
To thrive, the maritime community must create opportunities for a broader and more diverse workforce. This is essential to increase productivity, support innovation and to address pressures such as sustainably. Women will have a vital role to play in the growth of the maritime industry and the removal of barriers for women’s employment and narrowing of the gender equality gap will benefit the sector considerably.
The theme for 2023 is ‘Mobilizing networks for gender equality’ which means highlighting the importance of leveraging networks of people and organisations when overcoming barriers for women’s participation in the maritime industry and developing pathways and opportunities for career progression. I ask all AMWS members to consider how they can assist in this process.
Quite simply, equality for women means progress for all. AMWS encourages progress on gender equity within our industry.
There will not be an e-newsletter in June, as we will be publishing our periodical newsletter “The Mariners Lifeline” but the e-news will be back in July.
I hope you enjoy this edition.
