AMWS Maritime Scholarships
 Background & Application Process

Since 1999 on-going funding has been made available for the provision of funding of scholarships to the children of seafarers or ex - seafarers of low or moderate financial means undertaking sea- going or commercial courses in the maritime industry. The scholarships apply to each semester at an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO)  including those approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (refer www.amsa.gov.au).

"Seafarers" are broadly defined and can include anyone who earns or has earned a living from the sea such as the Navy, Merchant marine , deep sea fishing , ferries, tugs, port pilots or pilot boats, dredges, off-shore supply vessels and so on. Maritime courses include near coastal as well as deep sea courses.

The support programme is normally awarded in each semester up to the value of $3,500 per scholarship to assist students with course fees and pay living, travel to course and associated expenses. A selection panel of the RTO considers applications and recommends to the AMWS Council suitable candidates who match the stipulated criteria or eligible students can apply directly using the attached application form. The decision of the AMWS Council in any individual case will be final and no appeals will be considered. The Council reserves the right to modify the amount or terms and conditions of the scholarship as appropriate.

Assistance has been provided over many years to the Australian Maritime College (AMC), the Hunter TAFE and South Metropolitan TAFE, WA.

Potential applicants at AMC should access the University of Tasmania’s Domestic scholarships website direct.
