The April 2024 welcome message from the AMWS Chairman,
Mr David Parmeter
Mr David Parmeter
Hello everyone, and welcome to the April edition of the AMWS electronic newsletter.
At this time of year, we are obviously conscious of the significance of Anzac Day as the occasion to honour the memory of those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, in defence of our nation. In that regard I refer you to the report in this edition of the service held on 14 April at the Merchant Navy War Memorial at Rookwood. This event was made all the more significant by the official opening by the NSW Governor of the New and Remedial works at the Memorial. The centre piece is the installation of four brass plaques bearing the names and respective ships of the 862 Australian Merchant Mariners who sacrificed their lives for our country in the two world wars. The Merchant Navy has played a vital role in the service of Australia during terms of conflict and the memorial now gives full recognition to that fact. I am delighted to report that AMWS was a major sponsor of the new and remedial works and we applaud the energy, drive and commitment of the Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund in making it possible.
Also in the newsletter you will see a report that two students at the Australian Maritime College have been beneficiaries of Malcom Longstaff Memorial scholarships. If you know of anyone who may benefit from one of these scholarships, please refer to the selection criteria that can be found on the AMWS website. The provision of educational scholarships is an important part of the work we do and we are always looking for suitable candidates.
I trust you will enjoy this edition of the newsletter.
